Companies I’ll Never Recommend to a Friend

Hey there! I'm currently working on a CLI tool to deploy WordPress apps to DigitalOcean. Check it out! It's free and open source.

Two more companies made it to my “will never recommend” list last week — Boingo Wireless and Skype. Boingo Wireless for providing the crappiest Internet connection I’ve ever experienced at Miami International Airport (MIA) and Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London. Ping times reached 10 seconds, packet loss reached over 30%.

Skype for not providing a refund of the charged money via Skype Wi-fi Access, because apparently, a connection to Boingo Wi-fi lasted more than 10 minutes. The two make a perfect combination, don’t they ;)

    • I did request a chargeback on the Skype expense, but unfortunately my bank said something was against their rules, so they couldn’t return the money. They sent me a 10-page document explaining why and asked me to visit their consultant in their office, but it wasn’t worth the 10 euros I lost. That’s what happens when you work with a Russian bank :)

  • Hi there! We’re so sorry to hear you’ve had a negative experience with us. :( What you describe is definitely not the excellent customer experience we strive to provide, and we apologize for the inconvenience.

Although we can’t give you a refund (because you were billed using Skype), we’d like to give you a couple of access passes, so you can enjoy Boingo Wi-Fi on us during your next trips to the airport. Just shoot me an email, and I’ll get these to you ASAP.

    • Hey Lauren, thanks for taking the time to stop by and read this. During my next trip I’ll just get 3G plan with a prepaid sim in whatever city I visit. It’ll be much cheaper, accessible everywhere, more reliable and much faster. Thanks for your offer though :)
